All graduate programs in brass performance require pre-screening, so your application must be submitted by the Priority deadline of December 1.
Pre-screening materials will be submitted online using Acceptd. Pre-screening selections must include two contrasting works (or movements of works) of standard literature with piano accompaniment, plus one etude and three excerpts, as specified below.
Any complete etude from Rochut: Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Book 2
Sousa: Stars and Stripes Forever (no repeats)
Schoenberg: Theme and Variations (Variation V; baritone part)
Grainger: "Horkstow Grange" from Lincolnshire Posy (beginning to m. 17; baritone part)
Any complete etude from Rochut: Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Book 2 (down one octave)
Wagner: Overture to Die Meistersinger (RN J to RN L)
Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5, mvmt. 1 (RN3 to RN6)
Berlioz: Hungarian March (RN4 to 4 after RN5)
Applicants will be selected from the pre-screened recordings to play an on-campus audition early in 2024. In unusual circumstances, an alternate audition can be arranged. For the live audition, candidates must prepare new repertoire (2 contrasting solo selections & excerpts).
In addition, the candidate should submit a list of orchestral or band excerpts they will be prepared to play. Live accompaniment at the on-campus audition is not required.
